Alhambra HS Locked Down After Student w/a Weapon is Arrested
A junior at Mark Keppel High School in Alhambra was arrested today, and two handguns and drug paraphernalia were seized, thanks in part to a dog trained to sniff out trouble.
A private security firm was doing a sweep of the nearly 2,500-student campus in the 500 block of East Hellman Avenue, when a dog perked up at a student's backpack about 1:25 p.m., Alhambra police Sgt. Brandon Black said.
A gun was found in the backpack, and Alhambra police were summoned to take custody of the boy, he said. The suspect's locker was searched, and police found a second gun, Black said. The student's name was withheld because he is a juvenile.
Police also searched the student's Monterey Park home and questioned his friends about why he had the guns, Black said.
"Apparently, there was nothing that was part of a larger plan," Black said.
Some students remained "locked down" on the campus as late as 4:30 p.m.
