teacher commits suicide in back of classroom

YORK COUNTY, Pa. -- A group of students found a teacher's body at West York High School this morning.

About 10 students and a substitute teacher were entering their first-period class this morning around 8:30 when they found the teacher's body lying in the back of the classroom, officials said.

Officials have not released the identity of the deceased. The teacher apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The suicide occurred sometime before school today, officials say. Officials also said the teacher left a note behind.

Coroner Barry Bloss said the shooting isn't suspicious, and a handgun was recovered.

"Our entire West York family is grieving," said West York School District Superintendent Dr. Emilie Lonardi. "I think we started out the morning in shock and disbelief. This is a very beloved teacher."

The West York School District said all students are in their respective classrooms. Some students have contacted their parents to be picked up from schools, but officials are encouraging parents to allow their children to remain at school throughout the day.

Counselors are on hand.

No other information is being released about the teacher at this point. His family has not been notified and because the death was a suicide, the coroner does not usually release details.
