SS Forums Down Until Further Notice
UPDATE: The forums are back up!
I'll leave them in read-only mode for now. If you want to keep in contact with people from the forums, you should get their contact details via PM or something. Maybe one of you can create another forum somewhere else (in fact, please do... it's a free internet).
Why? I'm just tired of it. I'm the admin, so I can't really just "take a break" without missing out on a lot of stuff that I really shouldn't miss out on because, well, I'm the admin. Which brings me back to: someone else please feel free to make another forum.
To everyone who needs advice or something: Do whatever you can to make your life better, even if everyone else thinks you're insane. Believe in yourself and do what needs to be done. Screw the unbelievers. :P
Thanks for everything though, I learned a lot from everyone here. I hope you guys set up an awesome new forum or whatever you decide to do.
If you're interested in making a new forum, I recommend Gandi.net or Namecheap.com for domains, and HawkHost.com for hosting. MyBB or phpBB for the scripting, both of which I believe can be auto-installed from HawkHost's control panel. I use MySQLDumper for making auto-backups. If someone else makes a new forum, I'll link to it prominently from the old forums so people can find it.
Feel free to use the comments here to discuss this or whatever, but don't bother trying to talk me out of this. I'm done. That is all.

If not, i've got the money to get some decent hosting now that my graduation party is tomorrow. Anyway, it's been a good run. Kind of ironic that the class of 2012 graduated about the same time the forums went down. Lucky us I guess. Hopefully Soul will get it back online sometime.

I made my own forum, but I'm self-hosting it, all for free (except for paying to the ISP)... so it won't be able to handle a quarter of SS's (majorly bot and guest-based) traffic.

Everyone calm down. All this bitching over an Internet forum that never got that much traffic in the first place is down right retarded. I don't agree with Soul's decision to just pull the plug, but obviously she has some shit going down in her life and she has to make a decision between this forum and the rest of her life. We should respect that decision and move on. who knows, maybe after a month or two she'll decide to bring everything back or she'll give control to an admin (perferably HoS)
It's more the suddenness that gets alot of us, and it's not just an internet forum. It's a pretty tightknit community, at least for the internet. A lot of us have frequented on and off for months or years at a time. It's a part of us, although some of us more than others. I hate to sound like an entitled prick, but I really would have liked a warning of a week or two.
Eh, I don't know what is going on with Soul. Maybe she couldn't have given us a warning because of what's going on in her life? If so, I guess this was unavoidable, but, if she could have, I wish she would have. I'm not angry as balls like some of the members, but I've seen stuff similar to this happen to a forum before and the community will slowly shrivel up and die if it's not very, and I mean VERY, carefully transplanted.

It was a spur of the moment thing, one I don't regret at all so far. It's been coming on for years. I thought I could fix the forums, I thought I could make them go back to how they were in 2006-2007... full of reasonable people who could discuss things without resorting to intense amounts of bitching and hostility.
Nothing worked. I could either keep on devoting my time to 'fixing' it, or I could just scrap the whole thing. Kind of like education reform, lol. So late one night I was really tired and didn't want to deal with it anymore, so I deleted the files for posting. And then I laughed maniacally for a while, realizing I actually have power over my own damn forums again. And after a few days I figured I should probably post some kind of explanation. And thus you have this post.
Thanks to the people who are trying to be understanding about it. Screw the people who are bitching. I have better things to do with my time than deal with emotionally unstable bullshit. I hope you find some peace or whatever. I doubt you would ever have found it at SS with the way things were.

Since I'm feeling rather sentimental, I wanted to thank you personally for making this webpage. If not for it, me and thousands more would have just fell into the production line of the machine, until we came out, like the millions of clones that litter our societies. Political, scientific and social knowledge from the forums gave me strength, but we all gained the most important driver of all: freedom.
So thank you, Soul. I don't have any other way of expressing my gratitude. Here's to a bright future, for all of those finally waking up to reality. Goodbye, SS.

It's been over a month since the forums have been down, and it still seems surreal. The new forums just aren't the same, although they're getting better bit by bit.
What did the forums do for me? I found friends on those forums. The forums helped me cope through a difficult time in my life, middle school. I was introduced to different ideas, different kinds of people from different places. I think I'm a better person because of the SS forums. They weren't just forums, at least not to me. And now there will be kids that may need that same support I got, but won't have it. I don't know if there are any other forums like the ones on here.
I thank Soul for the forums, but part of me doesn't feel like thanking her. She yanked the boards right out from under us all, and I don't know how to react to it. I've always liked SoulRiser, but now I don't know rather to just be thankful I had time on the forums for as long as I did or be mad like Baron obviously is.
I know it's weird to post this on here over a month after it has happened when I've already made posts, but it's only now that I've been able to consolidate my feelings about the event. I'll make it no secret that I want the old forums back, and I always will, no matter what SoulRiser says about never reopening them up.

I fell in love with soul the minute I read her articles... she's an incredible person but this was a dick move...
I came on here to bitch about the college courses I'm taking (paid for by my employer; I wouldn't be taking them without the carrot of a potential future raise dangled before me) ... it's a pity the forum came to an end. I disappeared off the forums not because of any toxicity, but just because I needed some time away and, honestly, I had some growing up to do. (I'm still working on that part!)
The forums made a positive impact on my life, and I'm sad to see that they're gone for good. I hope that all the old regular posters from 2007-2010 are doing well now, fighting the good fight, and finding meaning in their lives.
I'm over 30 and I still hate school.
Now I gotta stop procrastinating and go finish writing that damn paper....
