How to unblock YouTube at school

Why do people want to unblock YouTube? YouTube sucks. Rather unblock something useful, like Wikipedia. Or rather look into alternatives to school, where you won't have stupid internet filters in the first place. Fortunately, there are ways to work around the internet filters and unblock YouTube anyway... you need something called a proxy.

The easiest way of unblocking YouTube at school is to use a proxy website. You can get on any other blocked site with a proxy. There are links to proxy sites on this page.

A proxy is a kind of gateway that pass information between the computer you're on and the site you want to go to. The proxy goes to the site in your place, downloads the page, and sends it off to you. So the site you want to be on only sees the proxy's IP. So in effect you are surfing sites indirectly. School filters only see you visiting the proxy, not the site you actually want.

It's good to use a proxy site that hardly anyone knows about. Popular proxies will get blocked faster. Proxies that you find by internet searches will be blocked quickly because they're so easy to find. Even if you find a good one it would be smart to have a backup you can use if it gets blocked.

Another way of unblocking YouTube at school is by making your own proxy tool. This is harder than using a proxy but it's a lot nicer to have because you're in control. Explaining how to do this is beyond the scope of this article, but if you search for "How to make your own proxy" you will find info. You can also earn money from your proxy by letting people advertise on it.

Other ways to unblock YouTube are by using translator sites, like Google Translate or Babelfish. You can also try using Google's cache version of the site. Although, you can't login that way, so it's still best to use proxies for YouTube, though these tips work with most websites.

New proxies get blocked all the time, so you need to keep finding new ones when that happens. Here is a really big list of proxies you can try.

Firewalls don't just block YouTube

School firewalls have been known to block a lot of educational and downright useful sites too. In fact, the software they use to block things with is extremely ineffective at blocking access to anything (as this article has just proven). That also isn't even taking into account the fact that there are a lot of interesting videos on YouTube that even teachers might consider educational, and that there's a lot to be learned by interacting with people online on social sites. Researchers have found that commercial filtering technologies mistakenly block access to content related to women’s health, gay and lesbian rights groups, and sexual education for teenagers. Everyone's Guide to By-Passing Internet Censorship for Citizens Worldwide
