RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Global Warming

Ok, this is an actually very good argument for it.
It involves critical thinking and everything!

(And I'll explain what he does, for Soul and Zero and such)
He makes a table:
True- Global warming real
False- global warming not real
Yes- we take action to prevent global warming
No- we be lazy and do nothing
cost= spending money, lots of money, in the false section it means that we've WASTED lots

This is how he fills it out: (Inclusing worst case scenerios)
--------"Yes"------------"No"
False: Cost----------Nothing--
::::::Possible
::::::Econ. Global
::::::Depression
__________________________
True: Cost----------Economic, political, social, environmental, health catastrophe
::::::good
:::::future

So, he says by default we should pick column A, because the costs of B far outway the costs of A ("The only backlash of taking action is global depression, which is already included in the backlashes of not taking action, with some bonus features added")
So by default, altogether we should take serious action.

That reminds me, I'd like to do SOMETHING to make our lazy, capitalist pigs (politicians) do something to stop being greedy assholes. (Environmentally in the topic anyways)
Any thing I can do? :/
(I'm assuming not much considering I'm not 18. Apparently as with that being the age that I can think and such its also the age that I can be make informed political decisions and political actions.)

Etc etc. (Ok, that's with emails but whatever)

BTW Russ Feingold is a Wisconsin senator, one of the two senators that voted against the patriot act.
The other was Kucinich... btw KUCINICH FER '08!

i don't agree with Feingold on everything and some stuff he's supported really pissed me off, but seriously he's got more balls than the entire Democratic party and his speech after refusing to vote for the PATRIOT act was absolutely beautiful.

I think Buenaventura Durruti is a pretty cool guy. eh kills fascists and doesnt afraid of ruins.

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice.
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction, ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Do you know what it's like to be loved by Death?

Yeah, rather be safe than sorry. I wish people would just do that all the time anyway, nevermind the costs.

This is just pascal's wager. This logic equally 'proves' most religions, most conspiracy theories etc.

This is not a form of Pascal's Wager because it does not require belief. Pascal's Wager is that it is better to believe in God because if God exists you'll go to heaven and if he doesn't you'll just be dead. This preparation against climate change requires only action. There is no difference between that and any other emergency measures taken. This is in fact the most rational way of looking at things: cost-benefit analysis.

Global warming shouldn't be the reason for anything. Even if it wasn't happening, is that an excuse to desecreate the Earth? Fuck no. You should keep your environment clean because it's the right thing to do.

There are thousands of doomsday predictions out there, should we be preparing for all of them? Of course not, we must choose which ones to prepare for based on scientific validity. Thus, the scientific validity of global warming must be discussed without reference to the consequences. I could make one up now which says that we'll all die painfully if the world governments don't give me supreme power, this should be done immediately according to your logic. And, if climate change was proved to be equally as valid as my BS, it should be treated equally with regards to attention.

Btw, there are negative effects involved with combating climate change. Limiting economies, diverting funds from other causes etc.

Although I personally believe in Global Warming, it needs to be treated objectively; the media seems to have made it taboo to deny it, despite the ongoing scientific debate.

Robert Frost. Nice. That's the only poem of his that hasn't been ruined for me.

Kucinich is a congressman, lol.

Global warming should be solved through company competition for eco friendly shit...In other words, educate the masses and theyll want to be a product thats eco friendly, and business can make a shit load of money from changing their product to something like that, but businesses tend to be corporatist in nature and conversative at that.

Global warming doesn't even matter. It's just a symptom. We're polluting the planet and we should stop doing that, if we stop doing that, global warming will stop too. Unless it's due to other factors, in which case we stopped polluting the planet anyway, which is always a good thing and should never be regretted.

Global warming is natural, it just happened to coincide with a rise in pollution(which does real, and horrible things like birth defects and killing birdies). Global warming has also coincided with the decline of piracy on the high seas. Maybe that's the real answer.
