Pennsylvania's kids deserve justice

Some state senators believe our children need to spend more time with the police. Senate Bill 56 would mandate school administrators to call the local police in certain situations, leaving administrators with no discretion to consider the individual circumstances.

Students today are more likely to be arrested at school than students of previous generations, despite the lack of proof of an increase in violence in schools. Policies like SB 56 create what's known as the school-to-prison pipeline.

Pennsylvania's children deserve better than this. Contact your state senator and ask him or her to stand up for our kids.

It's a phenomenon known as the school-to-prison pipeline: Students today are more likely to be arrested at school than students of previous generations, even though there is no proof that school violence has increased.

And it's policies like Senate Bill 56, currently before the Pennsylvania Senate, that send our children from the school yard to the prison yard. SB 56 would mandate school administrators to call their local police in certain situations.

It doesn't have to be this way. Take action now to oppose Senate Bill 56. [link]

An 11-year-old child with mental retardation kicks a teacher in the leg and is charged with aggravated assault. A first-grader who is too young to know better is hauled off in cuffs for indecent exposure. The typical playground fight - the kind of scuffle we all saw growing up - now lands kids not before the principal but before a judge.

Too many Pennsylvania students are already facing these scary scenarios as school administrators rely too much on the police for school discipline. SB 56 would only accelerate the flow of the school-to-prison pipeline.

Our children need people who believe in justice to stand up for them. Children belong in the educational system, not the criminal justice system. Take action. Oppose SB 56. [link]
