UK: The kids aren't all right
According to Ann Hagel, a psychologist and research development adviser at the Nuffield Foundation: 'Sixteen-year-olds used to be important members of society: they had jobs, money and an identity. Now, if you aren't interested in another two to five years of conventional education, you're a write-off. They're school children with no power or they're nothing.' This affects their self image - and our perception of them - profoundly. We've never much liked teenagers, 'but now we don't like them or need them. This doesn't just affect the 16-year-olds' perception of themselves, but has a knock-on effect on the 14- and 15-year-olds beneath them, who are already sizing up their options.'
