US: Youth saves woman who once saved him

A US teenager who saved the life of a woman choking on her food in a restaurant was amazed to find out he was only repaying the favour.

After Kevin Stephan had successfully performed the Heimlich manoeuvre on Penny Brown, his mother recognised her as the nurse who had carried out a cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him when he was just 10 after he was hit in the chest by a baseball bat.

"It was meant to happen," the17-year-old volunteer firefighter said.

Mr Stephan, who does the washing-up in the restaurant in Depew, near Buffalo in New York state, was the third person to try to dislodge the food Mrs Brown was choking on.

He told CNN: "My mum came over and said, 'This is the lady who saved your life'.

"I was in total disbelief."

Mrs Brown, an intensive-care nurse at Buffalo General Hospital, said: "It was pretty amazing once I realised who he was. It was an extraordinary feeling."
