US: High School bans `freak dancing'

No bumping, grinding, ankle-grabbing or simulated lovemaking will be allowed when Carmel High School students hit the dance floor at the school's next party sometime in March or April.

With a new policy banning ``freak dancing,'' the school has the authority to kick out unruly teenagers from future dances. In addition, students who fail random breath tests checking for alcohol use could be dismissed from dances.

``It's the way over-the-top stuff,'' Principal Karl Pallastrini said today, referring to which dance moves are prohibited. ``Essentially, it's anything that simulates a sexual act.''

The school's faculty agreed to put limitations on students' dance behavior after some parents voiced concern.

``We had some concern from the parent community regarding incoming freshmen who were seeing behaviors inappropriate for their age group,'' Pallastrini said, adding that some students are as young as 13.

``It's not appropriate for a public setting,'' he said.

Most parents seem happy about the ban, Pallastrini said, whereas the majority of students wish they could grind on undisturbed.

The policy was forwarded to the student council and passed, though not without objections.

``We're looking to see how it goes this year,'' Pallastrini said. After that, the policy's future is uncertain.

Both Foothill High School in Pleasanton and Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa banned freak dancing recently.
