UK: Dropouts 'cause parents stress'

The parents of teenagers who quit education at 16 suffer stress and depression, a poll suggests.

A survey by the Learning and Skills Council found that a third of such parents suffered depression symptoms.

Parents of pupils who left school, college or training without basic skills were the most likely to be affected, researchers said.

The UK has one of the highest teenage dropout rates among developed countries.

The proportion of 16 to 18-year olds in education and training was 75.4% at the end of 2004.

At the same time, the proportion of 17-year-olds in full-time education was 59.8%. The figure for 16-year-olds in full-time education at the end of 2004 was 73.3%.

In the survey, one in five parents whose teenage children had dropped out said they felt anxiety, while 14% said they felt "helpless".
