UK: More students 'caught cheating'

The number of students caught cheating or misbehaving in GCSE and A-level examinations in Northern Ireland has risen, the CCEA has said.

The most common offence was bringing mobile phones into the exam hall, while copying from the internet in coursework projects was also detected.

However, the biggest increase was in disruptive behaviour and disobeying the exam supervisors.

The figure for those caught cheating rose from 53 last year to 62.

The Council for the Curriculum Examinations Assessment said that was a tiny proportion of hundreds of thousands of exams.

"The disruption, if it occurs in an examination hall, it can have an effect on other candidates," Neil Anderson of the CCEA said.

"We're also concerned about the effect it could have on our employed staff who are there to supervise.

"Some of the cases and the details that we've read into have been quite disturbing in terms of the abuse directed at the adult staff in the examination hall."
