Why Does School Feel Unsafe?

Why does school feel like a place we can never truly belong? It's supposed to be a place of learning, growth, and discovery, but for so many of us, it's a battleground where we struggle to survive each day.

John Taylor Gatto, a fierce critic of the education system, once said that the true purpose of schools is not to educate but to indoctrinate. They're designed to mold us into obedient citizens who follow orders without question. And in that pursuit, they often crush our creativity, curiosity, and individuality.

John Holt, another advocate for alternative education, emphasized the importance of feeling safe in learning. He believed that when students feel safe, respected, and valued, they're more likely to engage with their education and thrive academically.

So, why does school feel unsafe? It's because we're constantly under pressure to conform, to fit into boxes that don't define us, to compete with others instead of collaborating, and to prioritize grades over genuine learning experiences.

Don't even get me started on bullies and unsupportive teachers! They can turn what should be a place of learning and growth into a nightmare.

Bullies prey on our vulnerabilities, making us feel like we don't belong, like we're not good enough. They thrive on power trips, using intimidation and cruelty to make us feel small and insignificant. It's terrifying to walk the halls knowing that at any moment, we could be their next target.

And then there are the teachers who are supposed to be our mentors and guides. But instead, some of them are dismissive, unkind, or even downright cruel. They belittle our ideas, ignore our struggles, and make us feel like our voices don't matter. How can we feel safe and valued in such an environment?

When bullies and unsupportive teachers are part of the equation, it's no wonder school feels like a minefield of anxiety and fear. We're constantly on edge, wondering when the next attack will come, when the next hurtful comment will be thrown our way.

We deserve respect, kindness, and support. And if the school system fails to provide that, it's not a failure on our part—it's a failure of the system.

Here are some more ways the system fails us:

So, to anyone who's dealing with feeling unsafe at school, know that you're not alone. Your feelings are valid, and there are people who care about you and want to help. There's nothing wrong with you. It's the system that's flawed, not you. It's okay to feel angry, frustrated, and misunderstood.

As alternatives to traditional schooling, consider exploring self-directed education where you have more autonomy over your learning journey. Online schooling can also provide flexibility and a supportive environment outside the physical classroom.

While we may not have the legal power to leave school without parental permission, we do have other forms of power. We can practice self-kindness, prioritize our mental health, and stand up for ourselves as much as we can within the system's limitations.

Good luck out there <3
