10 Reasons School Makes Me Feel Drained
Hey there, fellow survivors. School. Yeah, that place where we're supposed to feel enlightened and inspired, but instead, it often feels like a soul-sucking abyss.
10 Reasons Why School is Draining
- Rigid Schedule: Waking up at the crack of dawn and being forced to adhere to a strict schedule leaves us feeling like robots instead of humans.
- Irrelevant Curriculum: Let’s be real – when are we ever going to use algebraic equations in our daily lives? Probably never.
- Bullying: The constant fear of being bullied or harassed by classmates can make going to school feel like walking into a battlefield.
- Pressure to Conform: From the clothes we wear to the friends we hang out with, there’s immense pressure to conform to societal norms, even if it goes against who we truly are.
- Lack of Individualized Attention: In a sea of students, it’s easy to get lost in the crowd and feel like our needs and concerns are being overlooked.
- Standardized Testing: Spending hours upon hours preparing for standardized tests that measure our worth based on a narrow set of criteria is enough to make anyone’s head spin.
- Homework Overload: Balancing schoolwork with extracurricular activities and a social life feels like an impossible feat when teachers pile on the homework by the truckload.
- Strict Rules: From dress codes to bathroom policies, the seemingly arbitrary rules enforced by school administrations can make us feel like our autonomy is being stifled.
- Lack of Support for Mental Health: School should be a safe space where we can seek support for our mental health struggles, but all too often, it feels like our cries for help fall on deaf ears.
- Feeling Powerless: At the end of the day, perhaps the most draining aspect of school is the feeling of powerlessness – like we’re stuck in a system that we have no control over.
Ways to Get Some Rest
- Take Breaks: Give yourself permission to take short breaks throughout the day. Step outside if you can for some fresh air, stretch your legs, or simply close your eyes and breathe deeply for a few minutes.
- Practice Self-Care: Set aside time each day to do something that brings you joy and relaxation, whether it’s listening to music, taking a hot bath, or indulging in your favorite hobby.
- Establish a Bedtime Routine: Create a calming bedtime routine to signal to your body that it’s time to wind down. This could include activities like reading a book, journaling, or practicing gentle yoga.
- Seek Support: Don’t be afraid to reach out to friends, family members, or trusted adults for support when you’re feeling overwhelmed. Sometimes, just talking things out can help lighten the load and make it easier to relax.
Remember, taking care of yourself is not selfish – it’s necessary for your well-being. So, prioritize rest and relaxation whenever you can. You deserve it.
You’re not alone in feeling drained by the whole school system. It’s not just you – there’s nothing wrong with you. It’s the system that’s broken, not us. It’s like we’re expected to fit into this one-size-fits-all box, but some of us just don’t fit, and that’s okay.
Alternatives
We can also explore alternatives. There’s self-directed education, where we take control of our own learning and pursue what truly interests us. Then there’s online school, which offers more flexibility and freedom than traditional brick-and-mortar institutions.
But here’s the kicker – I know that for many of us, we don’t have the legal power or the ability to just up and leave school without parental permission. So, what power do we have? We have the power of self-kindness. We can be gentle with ourselves and recognize that we’re doing the best we can in a tough situation. We can also stand up for ourselves as much as possible, whether it’s advocating for our needs or finding ways to cope with the stress.
Remember, you’re not alone in this struggle. We’re in it together, and we’ll get through it together. Stay strong, stay compassionate, and never stop fighting for a better, more supportive education system.
Until next time, keep surviving.
