First-grader suspended for showing Paris Hilton cartoon

A first-grader became increasingly aware he was in trouble for showing classmates an online game featuring a cartoon of a near-naked Paris Hilton when a girl told the teacher, the teacher sent him to the principal, and the principal called his mother.

"I thought I would get grounded, like I am now," said Dylan Poitrinal, 7. He has no TV, computer, Xbox or CD player privileges for a month.

But both Dylan and his mother, Kate Wirt, said they were surprised by the one-day suspension handed down by Red Mill Elementary Principal James DeLisio.

"I thought the worst until I went home and looked at the site myself and saw what it was," Wirt said. "It was not sexually explicit. It was a cartoon likeness of Paris Hilton where you changed her outfits."

District spokeswoman Suzanne Tabachini declined to discuss specifics, citing confidentiality regulations.

Rather than suspend Dylan, Wirt said she thought the district should be accountable because he was able to access the site. Parental controls on the family's home computer would not allow him to see it, she said. "I would hope the school's filtering system would at least be as effective as mine, if not more so," Wirt said.
