German town lowers voting age to 16
BREMEN, Germany, May 22 (UPI) -- Authorities in the German city of Bremen have lowered the voting age to 16 in an effort to interest young people in politics, officials said.
It is the first time the voting age has been lowered from 18, the BBC reported Sunday. Voters must be 18 or older to vote in Germany's other 15 states and in federal elections.
Critics said lowering the age to 16 makes no sense because the teens must wait an additional two years to drive or sign a legal contract.
The BBC said studies indicate 16-year-olds are relatively ignorant when it comes to politics and they most likely would support opposition parties of protest.
Austria is the only other European Union-member nation that allows 16-year-olds to vote.
