Girl, 13, gets detention for hugging two friends
Two hugs equals two days of detention for 13-year-old Megan Coulter.
The eighth-grader was punished for violating a school policy banning public displays of affection when she hugged two friends Friday.
"I feel it is crazy," said Megan, who was to serve her second detention Tuesday after classes at Mascoutah Middle School.
District Superintendent Sam McGowen said that he thinks the penalty is fair and that administrators in the school east of St. Louis were following policy in the student handbook.
It states: "Displays of affection should not occur on the school campus at any time. It is in poor taste, reflects poor judgment, and brings discredit to the school and to the persons involved."
Parents urge change in policy
Coulter said she and her husband told their daughter to go ahead and serve her detentions
because the only other option was a day of suspension for each skipped detention.
"We don't agree with it, but I certainly don't want her to get in more trouble," Coulter said.
The couple plan to attend the next school board meeting to ask board members to consider rewording the policy or be more specific in what is considered a display of affection.
"I'm just hoping the school board will open their eyes and just realize that maybe they shouldn't be punishing us for hugs," Megan said.

Idea for rebellion: get massive amounts of students to hug everyone in sight. That'd be fun :)

That is retarded
WTF IS WRONG WITH HUGGING SOMEONE?????????????????????
Stupid pieces of s***.
You know, I have always been angry at myself for getting into a selective school full of nerds. And I have always regretted being born in the Czech Republic.
But as I hear stories from regular schools, both here and abroad, I feel extremely lucky. Sure the workload is hard, and the teachers are dumb. But compared to the ones at Megan's school, mine are perfect.
Many students vigorously kiss in the halls, and nobody has a problem with that. The teachers look away, the 6th graders giggle. But nobody is ever punished.
Serving detention is not the end of the world, it just means some lost time. But the principle, getting punished for hugging, is what concerns me.
I wish good luck to Megan.
At my old middle school we were not allowed to touch each other. A friend of mine got lunch detention for hugging one of her friends.
This Is Stupid, What Is Wrong With Hugging Someone?? I Hugg My BestFriend's All The Time!! They Should Just Open There Eye's It's Not Wrong, It's Just A Way To Show People That You Care For Them !! I Mean COME ON. At My School People Kiss And Hugg All The Time And Don't Get Told Off Or Given A Head Teacher's They Are Just Ignored. It's Something Everyone Does Unless The People That Runn That School Have No Friend's And Have Never Been Hugged ( SAADDOOOO'S) :L
fight the power!
i think this is STUPID!!! she should be able to hug her friends. I dont see anything innappropriate
damit! schools are getting stupider every day.
I see nothing wrong with hugging someone. Schools are getting stricter every day. Soon we'll get suspended just for saying "word".
That is the DUMBEST thing I have ever heard.
In my eighth grade year, a classmate saw a friend in the hallway who had just moved back after being away for 6 months. She came up and hugged her around the neck. A mean old teacher comes out and yells at them for hugging, and calls them both lesbians. Luckily, my high school doesn't enforce that stupid "no PDA" rule. At my middle school, if you were caught holding hands or hugging, you might as well be prepared to face the firing squad. Or an ugly old woman with nothing better to do than accuse you of being a homosexual.
This reminds me of when I was in the 8th grade and I had my arm around a friends neck. The vice principal say us and told us "it was wrong" after she said that I kept doing it just to piss her off but my friends are wiped pansies that need to learn to rebel, so they never let me.
:O
Omg, ok, that's it, blow up all schools of the world, don't give a hell about learning, freedom FOREVER!!!
