How To Unblock Google At School On A Chromebook

There’s a certain grim irony in the way schools handle technology. You’re handed a Chromebook with the promise of unlimited potential, yet often, it feels like you’ve been given a cage instead of a tool. The very device meant to broaden your horizons gets shackled by filters and restrictions. Among the strangest of these restrictions is the irony of blocking access to Google, a service that’s supposed to be the cornerstone of modern education. And is the parent company behind Chromebooks.

If you’ve found yourself grappling with this paradox, you're not alone. The filters and blocks can feel suffocating, and the sense of helplessness is real. But there are ways to break free from this digital prison, and it starts with understanding some basic tools.

One such tool is a VPN, or Virtual Private Network. Think of a VPN as a tunnel through the internet. When you use a VPN, your online activities are channeled through this tunnel, which disguises your actual location and encrypts your data. This means that if you’re trying to access a website that’s been blocked, a VPN can help you bypass those restrictions by making it appear as if you’re connecting from a different place.

ProtonVPN is a particularly useful option here. It offers a free plan with no logs, no speed limits, and it’s designed to bypass censorship. Operating under Swiss privacy laws, ProtonVPN adds an extra layer of protection for your data, which can be comforting when you’re navigating the sometimes murky waters of school internet policies.

Here’s the catch: You’ll need the ability to install software on your Chromebook to use a VPN. If you’ve been granted permission to install apps, the process is relatively straightforward.

Start by installing the ProtonVPN app from the app store. Select “Continue as Guest” and tap “Not Now” when prompted to upgrade. While the free version of ProtonVPN is quite functional, providing you with decent speed and reliable access, upgrading to the paid version offers additional features and servers. If you choose to upgrade, using our affiliate link helps us keep the lights on with a small commission, but it’s completely optional.

Once you have the app installed, you might run into the occasional server overload or slow connection. If this happens, simply switch to a different server within the app. Sometimes, navigating these hiccups is part of the process, but finding the right server can usually resolve these issues.

It’s a bit of a dance to get around these blocks, but it’s a necessary one when the resources meant to aid your learning are being used to restrict it. Remember, the fight to access information and resources is part of a larger struggle to make your educational experience as meaningful and fulfilling as it can be. It’s not just about unblocking websites—it’s about reclaiming your right to learn and explore on your own terms.
