Parents face court action for removing children from gay history lessons
Parents face possible court action for withdrawing their children from lessons on gay and lesbian history.
More than 30 pupils were pulled out of a week of teaching at a primary school which included books about homosexual partnerships.
The controversial content was worked into the curriculum at George Tomlinson School in Waltham Forest, East London.
The council has declared that children who missed the lessons will be viewed as truants.
The ruling means some families could breach rules that children should not be absent for more than 19 days a year.
Sanctions include spot fines, parenting contracts and ultimately court action.
The parents, who objected to the lessons on moral and religious grounds, said the content was more appropriate to secondary age pupils.
Pervez Latif, whose children Saleh, ten, and Abdur-Rahim, nine, attend the school, said he knew of up to 30 withdrawals from the lessons.
The 41-year-old accountant said Christian and Muslim parents had objected to the theme linked to Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender History Month.

Although I'm very for gay rights (I'm gay myself), people should not be forced against their will to accept it.
God! That's pure fucking shit man! There's nothing wrong with what a parent believes the children should be tought! And they're facing a god damn fucking court order?!!?!? It is so fucking retarded! And it's in god damn primary school! The government system is so stupidddddddddddddddddddddddddddd.
i don't have a problem with gays but it's completely unfair to teach those things to such young children and then take action against the parents for choosing not to expose their children to that at such a young age.
Parents should have some say in what their children learn. Especially at such a young age as primary school.
Yeah, they shouldn't be facing court action. This just shows how f'd up things are. The board's not doing any favors.
I mean, I'm for gay rights, but it's the parent's decision what they want their kids to learn sometimes.
I agree with everybody else..
I got nothing against homosexuality but parents should have a say in what their kids learn at a young age.
This is the only time I'm ever going to agree with the current education system.
In a perfect world, there would be no room for intolerance to things people can't control.
Why would you agree with the educational system on this? Ultimately neither is right, not the school for requiring mandatory attendance, not the parents for pulling them out as ultimately the goal is to have student's rights, right? For the students to decide?
Maybe this is confusing, what I mean is that why should they be punished, in a court, for withdrawing them? I may not be anti-gay but I support freedom of speech and expression so to say that you agree with the system on this one is stupid.
What's wrong with teaching kids about homosexuality? It is an emerging issue in our society, parents can put their own spin on it whenever the kid is home (they do the same thing when evolution is taught).
All of you guys say "It should be the parents choice". The school says "It should be our choice."
I diss both of these viewpoints. Give the kid the power, let him decide.
Yeah seriously give the kid the power. They're not god damned robots.
