School Transports Young Children By Taxi

School Transports Young Children By Taxi
State Law Requires Child-Restraint Device For Any Child 5 Years Or Younger

MIAMI (CBS4) ? A Montessori school in Miami Shores is accused by parents to have used taxis without any child car restraints to transport children between the ages of 2 and 4 on a recent field trip.

The Children's Village Montessori School at 650 NE 88th Terrace was originally scheduled to use busses to move the children between the school and the destination, but there were not enough for all of the children.

That's when the decision was made to use taxis to transport some of the students.

One parent told CBS4 that in her conversations with the school director, Yolanda Rodriguez, there was an admission that no child car restraint devices were used in the taxis that were transporting the children.

FLORIDA STATUTE 316.613: "Every operator of a motor vehicle as defined herein, while transporting a child in a motor vehicle operated on the roadways, streets, or highways of this state, shall, if the child is 5 years of age or younger, provide for protection of the child by properly using a crash-tested, federally approved child restraint device. For children aged through 3 years, such restraint device must be a separate carrier or a vehicle manufacturer's integrated child seat. For children aged 4 through 5 years, a separate carrier, an integrated child seat, or a seat belt may be used."
