US: Attorney General Gonzales States A Free Press Is Secondary To National Security

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales stated at a press conference on Sunday that he believes reporters should be prosecuted for printing classified information just as much as those who leaked the information in the first place.

Gonzales went on to state that the government will continue to tap the phones of reporters as part of a criminal leak investigation, in opposition to the public outrage concerning the matter. In reaction to Gonzales' statements, Lucy Dalglish, executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, stated, "I can't imagine a bigger chill on free speech and the public's right to know what it's government is up to, both hallmarks of a democracy, than prosecuting reporters."
