US: 'Monologues' author to visit school after suspensions
CROSS RIVER, New York (AP) -- The author of a well-known feminist play has agreed to speak at a school district where three girls were suspended after they used the word "vagina" while reciting the play.
Eve Ensler, who wrote "The Vagina Monologues," has accepted an invitation to speak Tuesday at a school theater, just before a meeting of the board of education, and will appear with the girls, said school board member Peter Breslin on Friday's "Today" show.
Breslin appeared with 16-year-old juniors Hannah Levinson, Megan Reback and Elan Stahl.
The girls were suspended for a day each after they included the word "vagina" in an excerpt from the play that they read aloud at a school event last week. John Jay High School Principal Richard Leprine said they had agreed not to use the word.
News of the suspensions prompted charges of censorship, and Ensler said they were "a throwback to the Dark Ages." District Superintendent Bob Lichtenfeld then postponed the suspensions for further study.
Susan Celia Swan, Ensler's assistant, confirmed that the writer would appear at the school.

Well, call me a conserve, but i think that the girls got what they got. They cant walk around using vulagarities as such. They should've been careful w/ their language at that event. i mean, if they wanna use filty words like that in their home oh well, but not in public, c'mon...
SO LET ME GET THIS STRAIGHT:
THEY LET THE GIRLS WALK AROUND IN MINI-SKIRTS AND FLIRT WITH BOYS
THEN THEY DON'T DEFEND THEM WHEN THEY GET HARRASSED
AND NOW THEY'RE IN TROUBLEM FOR USING A WORD THAT THE PRINCIPAL PROBABLY JOKES ABOUT WITH HIS COLLEAGUES.
Emprice, don't tell me that you agree with the school.
@emprice vagina is not a vulgar world the f-word or one of the a-words... how about blue waffles. If you know what that was you would totally ban it. But in all seriousness these girls were not trying to curse at people but to read a monologue from a feminist play. That is censorship.
@nekotheninja that's what I was thinking I thought I was too random to be that predictable. Bobobobobobobobo is much more predictable than I am. That's really saying something.
