US: Student Newspaper Story Draws Angry Reaction
There's a controversy brewing over the latest issue of Roosevelt High School's newspaper. A story in the paper takes aim at religious, racial, ethnic and other groups. The author said it's meant to be funny. Some are not laughing.
The front page gives a hint of what's inside the Roosevelt Round-Up. The story talks of using stereotypes when buying gifts for friends.
"I guess I thought it was a little bit offensive, but I tried to look at in a joking manner," said Katie Young, a student.
The story suggests getting Christians pornography and the star of David and then to watch their faces, according to the Roosevelt Round-Up story.
The story focuses on Green Party children and Democrats. The story says Republicans don't like immigrants, blacks, Hispanics or gays.
Roosevelt students said they can see why the article is controversial.
"It's offensive, but it's still protected by the First Amendment and it's also a high school newspaper," said Alex Snodgrass, a student.
Hussein Yousif, a student, said the story is entertaining to him.
"It's a joke. It's fun," Yousif said.
A note at the end of the article states that the story is for entertainment purposes, and that the author tried to make fun of everyone.
Roosevelt Principal Anita Micich acknowledged that there has been concern voiced about the article. She said she has met with the adviser of the school's paper. She plans to meet with the paper's student staff Friday.
It's up to the school to decide what action, if any, should be taken against the newspaper or the story's author.
The student who wrote the article is white, but a family member said there are Hispanics, Jews and African-Americans in his family, NewsChannel 8 reported. The family member said they stand behind him.
Roosevelt's policy states that articles cannot be hateful to anyone.
