US: Teacher takes revenge in yearbook page
In Ohio, one teacher had enough and set out for revenge against her school students - and her bosses.
The teacher happened to be the yearbook advisor and she quietly paid to take out an ad in the yearbook and published her own "report card" as she walked out the door to retirement. There is little doubt that Jean Sterling, a 35-year teaching veteran, is responsible for the controversial ad.
"She's told our principal, Mr. Allen at Wayne High School that she decided this was a chance for her to vent some of her frustrations," Superintendent Bill Kirby said. "Our yearbook advisor's job is to watch and make sure the students don't make a mistake where they might put something in that's inappropriate. I never expected though that a teacher would be in inappropriate."
Sterling's report card rates several issues including a "C" grade for students in general, noting their unwillingness to pay attention and lack of effort, and a direct attack on Superintendent Bill Kirby and his ability to run a school district, giving his administration an "F."
"Well, certainly, our administration would be a 'B' to an 'A.' High school is one of the most difficult jobs you have in administration. It's very challenging," Kirby said
More than 400 yearbooks contain the report card, 200 have been distributed. The district is holding off on sending any more out.
Superintendent Kirby says the school district is considering legal action against Sterling, not so much for criminal charges, but rather monetarily. He says Sterling should pick up the cost of having the yearbooks reprinted.
More than 400 yearbooks at $50 each comes out to more than $20,000.
"We need another set of eyes. This is a lesson to us. Don't take it for granted that one person is going to be able to accomplish what's been accomplished in the past," Kirby said.
School officials can't just tear out the offensive page. The other side contains a memorial to two students killed in an auto accident.
