Why does school make me hate reading?
According to John Taylor Gatto, renowned educator and author, the traditional school system is designed to suppress creativity and critical thinking in students. Instead of fostering a love of learning, it often leads to apathy and disinterest, especially when it comes to activities like reading. Peter Gray, a psychologist and researcher, echoes this sentiment, arguing that forcing children to read on a strict schedule and for predetermined purposes can kill their natural curiosity and enthusiasm for books.
And then there's John Holt, a pioneer in the homeschooling movement, who believed that traditional schooling often fails to recognize and accommodate the individual needs and interests of students. Forcing everyone to read the same material at the same pace disregards the fact that we all have unique preferences and learning styles.
If you're feeling frustrated and disillusioned with reading in school, I want you to know that your feelings are valid. There's nothing wrong with you for struggling to find joy in something that's supposed to be enriching. The fault lies with a system that prioritizes conformity over genuine learning and fails to recognize the diverse needs of students.
So what can we do about it? Fortunately, there are alternatives to traditional schooling that offer more flexibility and autonomy when it comes to learning. Self-directed education, for example, allows students to pursue their interests at their own pace, without the pressure of grades or standardized testing. Online schools offer another option for those who prefer a more structured approach to learning but still want the flexibility to study on their own terms. And for those who are ready for a greater challenge, starting college early can provide an opportunity to delve deeper into subjects that truly interest them.
You deserve to pursue an education that inspires and fulfills you, and there are resources and communities out there to support you along the way. So don't give up hope, and don't let school extinguish your love of reading.

Sadly I think many already lose this love by the time they're in high school.
