School Makes Me Feel So Stressed
If you're reading this, chances are you've felt the weight of school pressing down on you, suffocating you with stress and anxiety. You're not alone in this struggle; I've been there too, and it's tough. But let me tell you, your feelings are valid, and there's nothing wrong with you.
John Taylor Gatto, a renowned educator, once said that the true purpose of schools is not to educate but to indoctrinate. They're designed to mold us into compliant citizens, to fit us into neat little boxes, stifling our creativity and individuality along the way. And when you feel like you don't fit into that mold, it's no wonder you feel stressed.
Peter Gray, another insightful mind in the world of education, emphasized the importance of play in learning. But what do we get in school? Endless lectures, mind-numbing worksheets, and standardized tests. Where's the room for play, exploration, and curiosity? It's no wonder we're stressed when our natural instincts for learning are suppressed.
Laurie A. Couture, a parenting coach, advocates for a different approach. Instead of pushing kids into the rigid structures of traditional schooling, she encourages parents to support their children's interests and passions, to foster an environment of trust and autonomy. But sadly, many of us don't have that support at home, adding another layer of stress to our already heavy burden.
But here's the thing: there are alternatives. Self-directed education, online schooling, homeschooling—these are just a few options that allow you to take control of your learning journey, to pursue your interests and passions on your terms. It may not be easy, and it may require stepping outside of your comfort zone, but it's worth it for your mental health and well-being.
Let's talk about Summerhill School, a beacon of hope in the world of education. Founded by A.S. Neill in 1921, Summerhill is based on the principles of freedom, trust, and respect for children. Neill believed that children should be allowed to learn at their own pace, pursuing their interests and passions in a supportive environment. At Summerhill, there are no compulsory classes, no exams, and no grades. Instead, students are free to explore, play, and learn in a way that feels natural to them. The motivation behind Summerhill is simple: to create a space where children can thrive, where their individuality is celebrated, and where they can grow into confident, self-directed learners. It's a stark contrast to the rigid structure of traditional schooling, offering a glimpse of what education could—and should—be like.
So if you're feeling stressed about school, know that you're not alone. Your feelings are valid, and there's nothing wrong with you. But also know that there are alternatives, and there are people out there who understand and support you. Take a deep breath, and remember that you have the power to chart your own path, regardless of what the system may say.
