Teen, Attleboro reach broken wrist settlement

ATTLEBORO — A Massachusetts high school student whose wrist was broken when she was arrested by police has agreed to a $100,000 settlement.

Esther Durex, a 17-year-old Attleboro High School honor student, said she was struck multiple times when she was stopped and questioned after leaving a party in October 2008.

Police alleged she was combative and intoxicated, and she was charged with assaulting police, resisting arrest and disturbing the peace. Medical tests proved she had no drugs or alcohol in her system.

Her lawyer tells The Sun Chronicle of Attleboro that charges were dismissed last week.

Approval of the settlement with the city was requested jointly by the girl’s family and city officials. The settlement requires court approval, and a hearing is scheduled for Friday.

City officials declined comment.
