Teen killed mother in Halo 3 row
A US teenager killed his mother and wounded his father in revenge after they took away his violent computer game, a judge has ruled.
The defence team for Daniel Petric, 17, had argued his addiction to the Halo 3 game, in which players shoot invading aliens, had made him insane.
But the judge rejected this, saying he had planned revenge for weeks.
Petric, of Ohio, was tried as an adult and faces a maximum possible penalty of life in prison without parole.
On the night of the shooting in October 2007, Petric used his father's key to open a lockbox and remove a 9mm handgun and the game, the court heard.
His father Mark, who was shot in the head and survived, testified that his son came into the room and asked: "Would you guys close your eyes? I have a surprise for you."
He said he expected a pleasant surprise. Then his head went numb from the gunshot.
The Associated Press news agency reports that Microsoft, which owns the intellectual property for the game, declined to comment beyond a statement saying: "We are aware of the situation and it is a tragic case."

I love how the article blames everything on Halo...
Great More people on the bandwagon against videogames.
I bet Jack Thompson is climaxing to this..
yea this kid needs to go outside
Nice job you stupid dick. You give gamers, and my first name a bad name Daniel Petric.
The game isn't the problem.
The child is.
I forgot to add in my comment hehe.
I'l say the same as Puchiko, the game always get the scandal and that's disgusting.
There is maybe one person out of one hundred thousands that's this retarded. Medias are all on generalizing the situation, if one kid did it, every will too by playing that game.
I'm sure there was more to it than Halo 3. My guess is the game was the last thing he had left to keep him away from the shit of the real world (and possibly his parents), and when he lost that, the shit hit the fan. Also, that wasn't very smart... if they took it away he could have just downloaded another copy. Backups ftw.
Maybe he had dial up and couldn't or something but I agree on the shit of the world part..
FreakofNature: If reality didn't suck so bad than maybe people wouldn't be so into video games.
Halo 3...a computer game...? lmao
First, this is sadly another excuse for retards to blame everything violent that teens/kids do on video games. Second, this game was probably one of the few, if not the, the thing that helped him escape reality. Now, I do think that descision was very stupid. He could've just taken the game disk and sneak playtime when nobody's looking. That's currently working for me with my PSP. Hell, I'm even typing this on my smuggled PSP. And that's how I see it.
This is just another excuse for parents to blame everything on the game rather then the child.
Its not Halo 3's fault, part of the fault goes to the child for being such an overreactive dumbass to actually kill his parents over a video game.
And its part of the parents fault for not taking it away sooner and for not being too watchful or carefull
The Child needs some outside time and needs to find some freinds.
The parents probably did right, seeing that the child could have been so addicted to not do basic things such as talk back when questioned or eat dinner
but only playing the video game...
it makes me sad to see how low a person can go for something so stupid
(not implying that halo 3 is stupid)
also... Halo 3... a computer game...?ROFL LMFAO
lol. Computer? Halo 3? xD
People do stupid things when their last what I call "life drugs" gets taken away.
Hell, when my music was taken away (along with my computer, PS2, Xbox 360, phone, and TV) I was a complete vegitable. That was on top of it being one of the worst times of my life. So I can see where he was coming from. It was a bad idea though. I partially blame the parents for talking his game away. It's like asking a crack addict to quit cold turkey.
[sarcasm] I love how no-one's commenting on the fact that a judge used common sense for once and DIDN'T blame the "violent video game"
[/sarcasm]
Come on, the guy should get some sort of recognition for being semi-intelligent.
And the "planning revenge for weeks" thing does imply that the confiscation of Halo3 was the latest in a long line of things the parents had done.
Everyone blames video games. Period
i agree, they always blame teh video games. I'm safe from my DS from being taken away because i worked for almost all of the summer of 2008. But anyways, pretty much all of the people in the article are stupid. Espicaly the teen, who shot and killed his mom over a video game.
