US: Police arrest parents as 'social hosts'

A graduation party with alleged underage drinkers lead to the arrest of the parents who hosted the party.

This is the first time parents hosting a party where alcohol allegedly was being served have been arrested under the City of Edmond's social host ordinance.

Edmond Police were called to a home in the 200 block of Crown Colony Court around 1 a.m. Sunday in reference to a loud party.

According to a police report, officers saw several underage teenagers outside the home. The officers said there was a strong odor of alcohol present on the teenagers.

Police contacted the homeowner, Craig Macleod, 46, and asked him if there was any underage drinking in the house, according to reports.

Police said Macleod told them he did not provide the alcohol, but did allow the teens to drink because he wanted them to do it in a safe place.

He was placed under arrest on a complaint of violating the social host ordinance for allowing a place for minors to consume alcohol.

Afterward police instructed those at the party to come outside and call a parent to pick them up. According to a police report, Macleod's wife Teresa told the officers she felt she was doing the right thing by allowing the drinking to take place in the home. She also was arrested on a complaint of violating the social host ordinance.

Police estimate there were as many as 50 to 60 youth at the residence.

In December 2006 Edmond became the first city in Oklahoma to pass a social host ordinance. To cut down on underage drinking in Edmond, the ordinance penalizes adults who knowingly provide alcohol to teens in their home. Violation carries with it up to a $500 fine or 60 days in jail.
