US: Teen drivers facing new rules on who's able to ride along
Teenage drivers face restrictions on when they drive and who is in the vehicle with them, and health insurance companies will be required to cover mental illness just as they cover other physical conditions under bills adopted Thursday.
Drivers age 16 will be prohibited from having more than one non-family member passenger in the vehicle if a parent isn't also in the car. And drivers younger than 18 will be barred from driving between midnight and 6 a.m.
The goal is to reduce distractions that can prove deadly for young, inexperienced drivers and those in their path, said state Rep. Tom Raga, R-Mason, the bill's sponsor.
Also, if the teen driver with a probationary license receives a moving violation citation, the judge must require the teen to return to driving with a parent or guardian for six months or until he reaches 17, whichever comes first.
