It's okay to hate school: There is nothing wrong with you.

This is a support site for students who can't stand being forced to go to school. We are not telling you to drop out, rebel or do anything in particular. What you do is your decision and yours alone, we can just provide support and information for whatever choice you may make. What works for one person won't necessarily work for everyone. The point is: the choice is yours to make. And if, for whatever reason, other people refuse to let you make that choice, you will always find someone here willing to listen to you.
14 Good Reasons why School Sucks & Things I Hate About School:
- School sucks because if you don't like it, most people automatically think there's something serious wrong with you.
- School ruins learning. In school, learning is all about memorizing things, answering questions, and writing loads of crap on topics you don't care about.
- Because you're forced to go there, and if you want to try some other alternative, you need to get parental permission first. School is essentially pointless forced labour without pay.
- It sucks because people expect you to treat school as the most important thing in your life. Nevermind what you'd rather be doing.
- School sucks because once you're done, you'll probably forget 90% of what you "learned" there and burn all your books anyway. All you'll be left with is a diploma stating that you survived 12 years of hell. And very few people (besides your parents) will even want to look at it.
- Because talking to your friends is a crime at school.
- It sucks because even if you're bored out of your mind, you'll still get all the blame for not participating in class.
- School suppresses independent thought - if you disagree with the teacher, you're in trouble. If you dare to think of a new way to do something, it's automatically wrong.
- School sucks because if you do what they say and do all your work, you don't get time off - they'll just expect even more from you in future. And someone who cheats on their work and tests can just as easily do better than you.
- School sucks because life is short, and you'll never get that time back.
- School makes everyone around you panic over the smallest little things that none of them (or anyone else) will care about a few years down the line.
- Even when you go home, school invades your life by giving you homework as well.
- It sucks because even though school has all these problems, if you mention any of them, you'll be the one they blame, no matter how right you may actually be.
- School sucks because every now and then it does something useful for someone, and then everyone goes all "Look! That's proof that school is good for you!"... It's like getting free ice cream in hell - it just doesn't quite make up for all the other stuff.

In my oppinion, from middle school on up, you should be able to choose your own subjects. They should be what YOU want to learn about. Remember, this is just my opinion. If they would do this, as well as hire more GOOD teachers, school would be great. If I could choose the courses for my career only, I would LOVE school. It would be fun and exciting! I wouldn't feel like it wants to drag me down. Please Respond
hi Zach , i couldn't agree more... i would love school too if i get to choose my own subjects. School would have been a great place then.I've already known which career I want to follow. But school does not help me to gain skills which my job requires.It's just makes me feel so discouraged.I think we should focus on the subjects we're interested in and ignore the others , just let it pass you by ! I don't know if anyone will read this, but i am a ruined person. School has ruined me. Ever since i moved i hated school, because i walked in among a thousand people, and was invisible and bullied at the same time. My mental health detiriorated, and i was diagnosed with Borderline, depression and a panic disorder. Years later I am in year twelve and i am at my wits end. I am past it. It feels like a living hell. A drunken suicide attempt at a party where i was taken to hospital by ambulance has given me a reputation at the place. I have selfharm scars all over my body, and seeing girls happy at school gives me a feeling inside that can only be compared to acid coursing through my intestines. I hate this, because school is a chore for me, i have lost my friends, and i can no longer connect with people. I am afraid and lost, and i can't keep track of thought. My disorders make my memory terrible, so i learn nothing, and i am bound to fail my HSC. I aspire to go to university and become a film maker, but i can hardly get out of bed in the morning. My mother and father always buzzing in my ear about how dropouts end up in crap jobs, i don't want too...I want to go to university. And you know what the worst part is? 80% of the reason i do my assignments, homework and fear examinations is because i don't want to dissapoint my teacher. Because i sit their for the whole lesson every period pretending that I am listening. Suicide, and a black abyss are all that fill my life now. I have gone totally mental. I can't communicate, and i have no idea what to do. Everyday is a fucking mission. Its so impossible. I want to tear my heart out, because I'm screaming and no-one gives a flying fuck. Because its my life, and its going down the fucking drain. What the fuck do i do now.

my step dad has always told me that school is my job, but ive thought about that, people usually get paid at jobs, right? you dont get paid at school (unless your parents give you money for every a you get) and another thing about it being your "job" i dont know anyone who has stayed at their jobs for even close to 12 or even 16 years, if you decide to go to college, unless they own their own business, am i right? so why should we HAVE to stick with school for that long?
Technically, you are allowed to list "student" as an occupation. You get paid in knowledge... I guess. When it gets to college you actually pay them for knowledge, but you get more time to get a job so it helps even itself out. Plus there's tons of financial aid available. School paying money for you to attend would never ever work out anyways. There would be too many problems.

Outside of school i have been studying topics that interest me for about 3 years now such as economics, philosophy, logic, etc. but when i try to incorporate the knowledge i have learned into my schoolwork I'm wrong because it doesn't fit the textbook definition. I can't argue that I'm right either or the teacher will label me "insubordinate" and send me to INSCHOOL SUSPENSION, which is basically just going to a room and being isolated from the rest of your peers while a teacher yells at you to do your work. Man i hate school so much espaiclly public schools and here in Florida it isnt geting any better. They are adding more standerized testing, the same math, reading, writing, and science booklets plus new reading and math online tests. Also making them a requirment to pass regardless of how you do IN class. If the students do good collectivly the school gets more money -cough- school board staff raises -cough-. And we, the student, body get more shit FACT practices(for a class grade)!! -_-Its bad enough i have to stress about my ACT and SAT and they give us little practice booklets for that to(also for a class grade)
When that bill that came a while back about teachers being paid based on there class preformance i hoped they passed it. I would love to see what would happen if a teachers paycheack depended on whether the students liked them or not. Haha!

First off school should be chosen not forced. What I need to say is that employers need to go by knowledge that you have, not by your grades in school. I still go to school and I know basic HTML and basic Ruby (not to brag) so I can become a web designer. Getting through school does not mean you studied. It means you did the work and got at least passing grades (60%) on the tests. In fact, you don't even really have to do the work yourself. It's *shockingly* easy to get all your answers from the internet. For example, did you know factoring calculators exist? All you have to do is type in the problem and it spits back the answer at you. Most work is a matter of memorization, so tests are not hard. Multiple choice tests are a matter of elimination and guess work.
You can easily make it by in school by doing minimum work, because in the end it doesn't matter what grades you got, just as long as you got the piece of paper that says "Yay, I survived. This proves I'm competent. Now give me a job."

In middle school, we begin losing that... by the time high school comes around we have nothing left. We are told what to do, how to do it, and when it has to be done. My take on things:
I guess I never really hated high school, looking back on it; it was just really fucking boring. I used to sit and stare at blank walls all day, and maybe do a couple of worksheets or take a couple of notes on things I found interesting. I like learning new things, but I absolutely HATE having to go to class to do it. It's only a bullshit facade that is put up to make parents feel comfort that maybe their child is learning some real stuff that will make them the next Albert Einstein or Bill Gates. A lot of people find comfort in knowing that something actually exists, including a building with the name of a school plastered on it. I'd rather self-educate myself, but unfortunately the general workforce only looks at you if you have wasted all your time and money on a college education. College actually takes negative money, since most students have to take tens of thousands of dollars of loans out to fulfill the financial bits of college -because the FAFSA is so damn picky about giving out money-, which grows over the years due to interest. You'll be paying those off for a long while.
I admit that high school did teach me a lot of things that are essential to understanding how things work in life. Except I look back and see that a LOT of time was wasted on shitty things that don't apply to the person I am today. (Sorry math, I'm looking at you.) By the time I was in my Junior year I was pretty much sure what I wanted to do (2D animation and other arts) but there was no opportunity to explore that career because I was stuck doing f(x) equations (math), or finding how many calories a Cheetoh has (chemistry), or trying to figure out why the author chose to use a butterfly as a metaphor for freedom (english), and so-on.I could go on and on about the fuckload of pointless assignments that I remember having to do... and for what?
Answer: only to have to go to college to learn the same shit form all four years, because of the general education requirements to get the AA/AS degree. Which, by the way, actually is usually longer than two years. They need to put ann asterisk by that and say "results may vary." Tons of students go for three or four just to get their AA/AS. Plus, the material isn't much harder than that of the high school courses. The only good thing is choosing the schedule, and all the free time there is outside of class. Which goes back to me hating being in class. There's more choices of classes too, and the professors are usually pretty good people.

I've just had a nice, long holiday and as I type this, it's almost 10:15 PM(well, where I live...lol) and tomorrow I go to yet another "first day of school" and I just loved the feeling of waking up late in the morning in the holidays and not having to torture myself to wake up so early in school days! When I was in the seventh grade, everyone thought of me as a nerd and all the so called 'popular' people would tease me and I would be depressed almost everyday. The school work added more and more to my hell!! And hear this; we didn't have a counselor and we only got one at the end of the year, when I had to go to high school... Omg..Now, in high school, I have lots of friends and no one thinks of me as a nerd anymore and we have two counselors, BUT SO??! We get a shit load of homework and projects and exams and so on...! I always get shouted at by my parents for staying up late every night, but so what?! I spend hours everyday doing homework and/or other stuff for school and I don't get enough free time at all!(my parents are shouting at me right now btw... haha..) Anyway, I gotta go now and get ready to enter the big-ass, shitty door to hell and get taught by you know who, tomorrow.. cya..

I hate school because when I was starting school they stuck me in a room similar to a mental hospital because I "talked to much". Thanks to school I've been threatened by the cops for truancy and when I ask to be home schooled my parents just ignore me. School has ruined so much of my life it's pretty much ruined even after I get out.

do you think 6 hours is hard enough?! i live in colombia here we wake up at 5 am to get to school and then we are trapped in the same room for 8 hours with just two little breaks, all the teachers come to your calss so you have no other option that be sitting all the time in the chairs in silence, hearing stupid lectures from stupid people that dindn't have enough money to pay for other career, so they take their frustration on us!

I used to go to a german public school that was equivalent of school heaven. There was little homework, it was enjoyable, you were respected by teachers, treated like an adult, had little homework, free thought, independent thought was promoted (actually stated as one of the goals of german education), had lax rules (drinking age sixteen, beer at the school kiosk, basically no punishments for drugs, just to name a few), great teachers, cool students with a great personality, and the list goes on and on. All you guys thinking, "but in germany everyone's a nazi", well the country has changed, progressed and moved away from their former conservative ideology to being much more liberal. Just to bad my fucking parents didn't like it that much. They made me and my siblings move to singapore with them because of my fathers job. They decided to send me to the Singpore American School. It is hell. The teachers have no respect for you as a student, they don't treat you as an equal human being, but instead as their bitch, they have no consideration for your personal life, where you're from or what you have to say, they give extremely unreasonable amounts of homework, the test are impossible, i can't do anything else other than study and most of the students are completely brainwashed koreans, indians and chinese who will do anything for a good grade and do extremely well in everything except english and sports. Those kids do nothing other than school and are put under enormous pressure by their parents to do well, many hire tutors for every class they take each day for two hours. All that leads to extreme inflation of what the teachers expect of students and i find it almost impossible to compete and only manage to get mostly Bs despite staying up every night till at least 12 to finish my homework. The few American's and Europeans who actually go to my school, are struggling at least just as much as i am. Sports teams are dying out at our school and students only participate in clubs to get service hours for their student record. Sriously? Is this what school is about. At least i don't think so. Finals are coming soon, ill go STFU now i already wasted too much time and its 10 already better finish writing an essay on the great gatsby, read an 80 page french book and 20 pages of American history. Better do it now, i just got here by typing i hate school into google to vent out a bit of my frustration.

Something else though, is when you move to a new area-a small town-and the school board desides it's a good idea to put you in with a bunch of people who've been in the same classes since kindergarden. Yeah....reeeeaaaaal nice school board.(happened to me-impossible to make friends when their "cliques" are already formed. I have none here-true facts.)
Im in eleventh grade(been friendless and emotionally unstable since 9th), gonna have to do a year or two extra since i skip alot. But can you blame me? I already learned most of this stuff in grade 5(seriously, education on the east coast of Canada sucks-it's non-existent in comparison to central).
Another fact, is that im guessing most of you arent artists...well, i am-i want to be a comic artist. Do you have any idea what pressures i get from my parents and teachers "That's not a real career choice, choose something else!". fucking morons.
in all seriousness, I would be ok with being forced to go to school up untill grade 9, then being able to graduate. That would perfect! it would cut down on social and emotional issues and give us time to actually figure out what we want to do with our lives-not to mention we wouldn't have to skip classes out of boredom.

I hate school because even though we don't want to do go, we still have to stress about it. And if one teacher hates you, then they fail you. and then you truly wasted all of your time. My teacher absolutely refuses to give me my work, so I have to re-take the class next year. I despise school, and how pointless it is.

I hate school because I get bullied everyday. I asked the principals and teachers for help, but no one helps me. It has gotten me so upset and worried, but no one does anything about it, because they either hate me personally, or they don't care about the issue. Not only that, but I get screamed at if I don't complete my homework. They make us do a ton of homework and projects, and if you don't do it, they embarass you or make you feel bad. One of the things that bothers me most about school, is how almost every concept we are taught in school was created by people waaay before kids went to school (ie: pythagoreans theorem). This just basically proves that school sucks the creativity out of us, and we would most likely live happier and more insightful lives if the education system was abolished.
The government brainwashes us from a young age to do whatever they tell us to do, so we will grow up to be what they consider a contributing citizen (makes the government money).

So, i agree that school is boring, but it does help us become prepared for the real world. For instence, i want to become a forensic scientist. If i didnt have chemistry class, i would not of realized the proffession i want to join. If my friend didnt attend vo tech, she wouldnt of became a nurse aid.

I am not saying I hate school but I hate the way the system teaches me and many other students. I know it helps for our future careers/jobs, but some classes are unnecessary. I'm sure most people wish they could take classes that help prepare for whatever they want to be in life and not take required classes in school that does not relate to their future careers.
Oh my god I hate that place, When you start, in kindergarten-5th grade, your average person generally likes school, or is neutral to the idea of it. That's because you don't know anything about anything. A five year old child, no matter the IQ will still be very naive. As you move on to middle school, you drift towards a negative opinion of school, you begin to notice how the school uses the students and tries to force it's ideas on them, this is because dealing with little kids, you can maintain the idea that the world is a happy place with no problems... etc, but as time moves on that idea becomes quickly forgotten. middle school has limited information that actually sinks in, and you become more focused on your social life than in your school life. Now after that, people want to completely give up on the idea of school for learning. Students of high school don't want to learn any more, by the time you get that far you just don't give a crap anymore, you want to leave, party, have fun. why do you think noone has "school pride"? School's boring, and the information taught is mostly useless. A surgeon won't need most of the things taught, a fisherman would find it all useless, a pilot would find most of it useless, you'll never need any of that math crap they teach you, English is hit or miss, and history is only important in a broad sence.

You know, this really made me think about what you said. Now that I think of it again, school really does teach a lot of useless information. It's true, I knew many children in elementary that loved school. Hell, even I did! Then when some of middle school and ESPECIALLY HIGH SCHOOL comes, no matter how smart you really are, you WILL have some sort of dislike towards school whether it be the teachers,homework,tests,et cetera. I hate school so much especially my school because it's packed with tons of idiots and assholes. I can't stand any of them. It's just a waste of time. What you do all is day is that you wake up early, go to school for 6 fucking hours and come back and do your homework for the rest of the day. You don't even get time to ANYTHING else. The sad real truth, is that I could learn much more by skipping school and googling the facts that they spend days (sometimes weeks) trying to "teach". It's 2011 now we don't need teachers to learn. I find it funny how the older generations insist that we need to be 'more independent' and they blame cell phones, iPods, video games, etc for the 'way we are'. But really, it's school. School teaches us to be dependent and to obey instructions without thought or argument. It turns us into a bunch of suicidal, mindless zombies, who hate their lives and really don't give a crap about anything.
As a former teacher I have to say that everything in this article is correct. That's pretty much why I'm not doing it anymore. I decided to teach after getting laid off from a job. I thought I could help kids. Even though my kids went to private school or were home-schooled I thought this was the way to go. I was wrong. Everything in this article is true.
I have no problem with education; I do have a problem with how it's done in public schools.
I couldn't keep teaching because I was not able to allow students to develop their individual strengths. I hated that they had to be quiet in situations where they should have obviously been allowed to be social. I remember there was a rule that they could not talk on the bus on the first leg of a field trip, but if they were good, they could talk on the way back. That's the backward kind of logic schools are full of.
Another thing I thought was really outlandish was that the kids had to be quiet in the halls but teachers would talk to each other without thinking about how loud they were. What an excellent example for students! Do as I say, not as I do.
Most teachers seemed to be angry about something. It's like they had been forced to put up with all the crap that school is, and they ended up taking it out on students. I didn't want to become that. I had to get out.
You have every reason to hate school. It's a very questionable program. It harms kids. It is a cauldron of mediocrity. It's dreadful for most of the teachers I know. Get out if you can. Find some kind of alternative. Study what you are interested in, if you can; even if you don't have much time because school has robbed you of it.
I am at school right now and I would just like to say that I am in year 12 and when I was in year 3 I got kept down because my teachers influenced my parents that I wasn't smart enough to go to the next grade. So this is my 13th year and im suprised that a teacher hasnt come and kicked me off the computer yet for being on this site.
